The Destination
Sonoma County, the less-traveled alternative to nearby Napa, delivers all of the epicurean goodness of its glitzy neighbor to the east. Michelin stars? Check. Award-winning wineries? Double check. But here, about an hour north of San Francisco, you'll find that things are a bit slower, more agrarian. Towns like Kenwood look much the way they did back in the 1800s, with adobe homes, Mission-era mansions, and family-run farms linked by winding country roads.

The Digs
Situated in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country, the evocatively named Valley of the Moon plays host to the Birmingham Bed & Breakfast, a country inn celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. This quaint four-room B&B sits on two acres of fruit trees and gardens, and looks out over hundreds of acres of vineyards at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains. Each beautifully appointed guest room features hardwood floors and is equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi and a private bathroom. Wake each morning to a full gourmet breakfast, much of which is prepared with herbs and vegetables grown in the on-site garden.

The Diversions
• Take advantage of your tasting passport to 30 wineries around Sonoma
• Head into the town of Sonoma for lunch at The Girl & the Fig, set just off the town square
• Check out Jack London State Historic Park and visit the cottage where the famous author wrote

  • "Everything was comfortable, immaculate, and beautiful, with excellent gourmet breakfast in a relaxed setting."
