A mountain guide will make your Kilimanjaro climb an unforgettable experience before a five-day safari allows you to explore the rest of Tanzania.

The Destination
Dream African getaways are about as diverse as the continent's geography. But for the serious outdoor enthusiast, a trek to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro tops the all-time wish list.

You'll always remember standing on top of the world—gazing down on the sun as it breaks through the pillowy clouds—but your experience along the way will stay with you just as long. Begin by traversing the low-lying jungles, crossing through alpine scrub, and eventually reaching desolate terrain that looks more like a view through the Hubble telescope than anything you've seen in real life.

The balmy atmosphere will thin out to crisp, cool air as you ascend, taking a toll on your body and challenging you to summit Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. If the trip up feels like the deepest breath you've ever taken, the descent from Mt. Kilimanjaro will be the most satisfying exhale you've ever known.

Make the climb during this 14-day trip—which includes a five-day safari—courtesy of One World Safari Tours.

The Itinerary
Day 1: Departure
Depart on an overnight flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Day 2: Arrive in Tanzania
Meet a One World representative at Kilimanjaro International Airport before transferring to the lodge. In the late afternoon, your group will meet with your team of mountain guides to be sure you have all the necessary personal gear. Missing items will be available for rent.
Overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge. Dinner provided.

Day 3: Marangu Gate (1,843 m) to Mandara Hut (2,700 m)
Board the One World Safari Tours private shuttle with your guides and fellow trekkers to travel to the gates of Mt. Kilimanjaro. After checking in and registering at the Marangu Gate, you will set off for a four- to five-hour walk, climbing through a rain forest with giant ferns and moss-covered trees until you reach your stopping point for the night, Mandara Hut. These A-frame structures house six to ten bunks per hut. Meals are prepared by your private chef and served in a communal dining area.
Overnight at the Mandara Hut campsite. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Day 4: Mandara Hut (2,700 m) to Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Your six- to eight-hour trek today will have you passing through a short stretch of forest, skirting the base of the Maundi Crater, and emerging into the transition from rain forest to moorland. Scramble up the rim of the Maundi Crater for your first impressive view of the Kibo Crater.
Overnight at the Horombo Hut campsite. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) to Kibo Hut (4,703 m)
Hike towards the Mawenzi Hut, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way. Your six- to eight-hour journey today will lead you to the "Saddle," the area located between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. Enjoy the views along the route as you make your way to Kibo Hut in the early afternoon. Once you arrive at Kibo Hut, prepare your gear, replace your headlamp and camera batteries, and make sure you have everything set for an early wake-up call.
Overnight at the Kibo Hut campsite. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Day 6: Kibo Hut (4,703 m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) to Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Your climb to the summit starts at just before midnight. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave, before the path zigzags up to Gillman's Point, which is located on the crater rim. (This is probably the most demanding section of the entire route.) Upon reaching the highest point of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak, capture the feat with some pictures and take a moment to enjoy the sunrise.

Then, make the three-hour descent back to Kibo Hut. After a short rest there, gather all the gear you left behind for the ascent and make the three-hour trek back down to Horombo Hut. The total time spent walking on this day is around 14 hours, so enjoy dinner and a well-earned night of sleep.
Overnight at the Horombo Hut campsite. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Day 7: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) to Marangu Gate (1,843 m)
On your final morning on the mountain, make the five- to seven-hour walk back to Marangu Gate. (Discretional tipping of your guide, cook, and porters is customary at this time.) The One World Safari Tours team will be at the gate to greet you with celebratory libations, climbing medals, and loads of congratulations. After your short celebration, sign out at the park office and receive your summit certificates. Depending on time and group size, either a buffet lunch will be served at the gate or a shuttle will be waiting to take you back to your lodge in Arusha for showers, rest, and a dinner at the lodge.
Overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Day 8: Local charity visit

Today, you'll visit and spend time learning about the village, school, or charity that your trip has supported. Afterwards, return to the lodge for a relaxing afternoon and evening.
Overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Day 9: Safari to Tarangire National Park

Today, you'll head off on a game drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for its herds of elephants and ancient baobab trees. Spend the afternoon counting elephants, spotting lions, and taking in the views of this vast park. While on safari, you'll spend each night at a camp with reliable hot water and electricity; water, snacks, and locally grown coffee; private bathrooms; and proper beds with mosquito nets.
Overnight at a camp with huts. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Day 10: Safari to Lake Manyara National Park
After breakfast, proceed to Lake Manyara National Park, a great salt lake that's home to flamingos, elephants, zebras, giraffes, and hippos. After a picnic lunch at one of the many scenic viewpoints in the park, continue on an afternoon drive while keeping an eye out for the elusive tree-climbing lions.
Overnight at a camp with huts. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Day 11: Safari to Serengeti
Head out on a four- to six-hour ride to the plains of the Serengeti—home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, and other large cats. Lunch will be served en route, as you work your way through the savanna and acacia trees with an eye out for giraffes, elephants, antelope, buffalo, impalas, and more.
Overnight at a camp with huts. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Day 12: Safari to Serengeti and Great Rift Valley
Today's safari will take you back through the Serengeti and into the Great Rift Valley. On a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of Oldonyo Langai, the region's most active volcano, as well as the area's shifting sand dunes. And watch out for giraffe crossings.
Overnight at Endoro Lodge. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Day 13: Safari to Ngorongoro Crater
Start your final day in Tanzania with a sunrise safari to the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This volcanic caldera has its own ecosystem and is home to a vast array of wildlife, including one of the largest populations of lions on the planet. After the safari, your driver guide will take you back to your Arusha to catch your return flight to New York City.
Breakfast and lunch provided.

Day 14: Overnight flight to US
Arrive back in New York City.
