Spot gentle pandas at play and meditate on Taoist tranquility deep in the heart of Sichuan province.

The Destination
You'd expect the capital of Sichuan province to pack a punch, considering its famously fiery cuisine—and Chengdu doesn't disappoint. Despite recent proliferation of neon lights and soaring structures of glass and concrete, the advance of modernity can't usurp the city's choice location between eastern river-carved plains and a mountainous northwest, historically allowing Chengdu to prosper while providing natural protection from outsiders. Nowadays, those ridges mostly protect giant pandas—80 percent of the world's panda population lives in Sichuan province—but the city flourishes on, meshing ancient tradition with a modern perspective to form that characteristic Chinese contradiction. Reflect on centuries of tradition in the quiet corners of a Taoist temple, rub elbows (literally) with locals as you shop on swarming pedestrian streets, or venture to Beijing or Xi'an if your bucket list is calling—your only guarantee is that an adventure in this vast country is sure to leave you transformed.

From cuddly pandas to placid temples, interior China becomes your stomping ground on this eight-day trip to Chengdu, courtesy of

The Itinerary
day 1:
Board your overnight flight from the US, enjoying an in-flight meal on your way to Chengdu.

day 2:
Upon arrival in Chengdu, a guide will transfer you from the airport to your hotel. Then, you'll have the remaining hours of the day to rest up from your trip and catch first glimpses of China.
Overnight at Mercure Chengdu North Hotel. Breakfast provided.

day 3:
Go ahead, start squealing: This is the day you get up close with the giant panda. Visit the breeding and research center—the largest panda reserve in the world—to learn about conservation efforts being made on behalf of this gentle, endangered species. Still under the spell of your enchanting encounter, you'll spend the rest of the day touring a silk-spinning factory, stopping at Wuhou Memorial Temple, and soaking up a little piece of daily life in Chengdu as you shop on Jinli Street.
Overnight at Mercure Chengdu North Hotel. Breakfast and lunch provided.

day 4:
Now that you've gotten an introduction to the city, take some time to explore deeper at your own pace. Browse exquisite artifacts of jade, bronze, and gold at the Jinsha Site Museum; or go for a hike through the stunning scenery of Mount Qingcheng, an important center of Taoism set amid dramatic waterfalls and rock outcroppings.
Overnight at Mercure Chengdu North Hotel. Breakfast provided.

day 5:
Espy locals practicing t'ai chi while the morning sun lights up courtyards and lush gardens around the Qingyang Palace, an expansive Taoist temple—as an enormous mosaic of the yin and yang symbol proudly evinces. Erudite travelers will especially enjoy a stop at Du Fu's Thatched Cottage, a museum and memorial to the eponymous eighth-century Chinese poet. Then, you'll stop at a jade museum to explore the history of the precious stone and spend the rest of the afternoon wandering among the local crafts and tea houses of Kuan Zhai Alley.
Overnight at Mercure Chengdu North Hotel. Breakfast provided.

days 6 to 7:
Continue to explore the city at your leisure, picking up any last souvenirs you've had your eye on; day trips to Xi'an, Beijing, or the surrounding area are also available at additional cost.

Say your goodbyes and board your return flight back to the US.

  • "Antique yet up-to-the-minute, familiar yet unrecognizable, outwardly urban but quintessentially rural, conservative yet path-breaking, space-age but old-fashioned, China is a land of mesmerizing and eye-opening contradictions."

    -- Lonely Planet
  • "Often called the gateway to the country’s wild west, Chengdu is something like the San Francisco of China, a comparatively lush and relaxed city... that prides itself on its cuisine (super-spicy) and its proximity to nature (pandas are a big deal here)."

    -- Condé Nast Traveler
