Put some air in your tired vacation plans with this week's Escape to Parsonsfield, Maine, with Back Country Excursions, the first and longest-running mountain bike touring company in the Eastern United States.

Go off road in the 207 area code along the remote, secluded foothills of the White Mountains. Mountain biking enthusiasts love to freewheel along this rugged terrain, and so can you from May 1 through November 1, 2012 for $245.

Pedal past the beaten path with your choice of two-and-a-half-day packages for either the novice or experienced rider. (Hint: The latter is familiar with single-track trails and comfortable at a more aggressive pace.)

Either way, your Escape includes daily guided mountain bike tours; gear rental including bikes and helmets; three breakfasts and two lunches; instruction; and use of tubes, canoes, and kayaks for multi-sport adventures.

Disbelief meets full suspension with this epic Wild Wild Wild West trail, a five-mile singletrack experience for intermediate to advanced riders that begins with a long burning ascent followed by an exhilarating and dramatic downhill rush through gorgeous Maine pines.

Loop around the smooth and dry terrain of the Plantation Singletrack Loop trail, aimed at novice riders, as you meander through plantation stands of Red and White pines with little rocky terrain.

Go head over handlebars for the rustic, all-wood-heated mountain lodge that you'll call home for three nights. Relax by the wood-fired cedar hot tub or dine on the screened-in flagstone porch with other Maine-iac mountain bike enthusiasts. There's also a large gathering space with overstuffed chairs, sofas, and games.

It'll be all downhill from here once you hop on this perfectly paced Escape.

  • "Northern New England's outdoor recreation capital. This high range of peaks is a sprawling, rugged playground that calls out to legions of intrepid kayakers, mountaineers, rock climbers, skiers, mountain bikers, bird-watchers, and backpacking hikers."
