The Destination
A former mining and mill town known for its laid-back bars and oddball festivals, Nederland makes a friendly stop on the Peak to Peak Byway and moves at a more leisurely pace than bigger, brassier Boulder. So leisurely, in fact, that the town's annual Frozen Dead Guy Days parade takes place in slow motion. Nederland pairs its eccentric spirit with a dizzying array of outdoor activities in nearby Roosevelt National Forest and Indian Peaks Wilderness. Hikers, bikers, snowshoers, and skiers stock up on supplies at the Oregon Trail-era general stores before setting out on wilderness paths crisscrossing the mountains.

The Digs
Overlooking burbling Boulder Creek and the historic facades of Main Street, the log-cabin-style Best Western Lodge at Nederland bursts with Wild West influences. Common areas feature rough-hewn log surfaces, freestanding fireplaces, and supple leather couches, while spacious suites and guest rooms are adorned with Navajo blankets, wrought-iron bed frames, and locally made artwork. Best of all, the heated porch with a jetted hot tub makes the perfect place to kick back after a long day on the trails.

  • "Built in 1994 with rough-hewn timber, this lodge is all modern inside. Upstairs rooms have cathedral ceilings, and those downstairs have gas fireplaces. The enthusiastic staff will help to arrange just about any outdoor activity."
