The Destination
It's easy to see why international celebrities are so protective of Glover's Reef, 36 miles off the coast of Dangriga, Belize: This Caribbean paradise that's surrounded by a slew of privately owned islands sets the standard for marine-life conservation and those looking to get away in secret seclusion. "Glover's Reef Atoll was named after 17th century pirate John Glover, who used the remote islands as a base for raids against treasure-laden Spanish galleons," says Lonely Planet. "Blue waters and the chance of seeing dolphins, mantas, and sharks keep adventurous divers coming back for more."

The Digs
Isla Marisol Resort is a laid-back boutique property that lets its idyllic beachfront setting do all the showing off. Transfer to the island by boat with scenery seemingly preening for your point-and-shoot. Perched up on stilts, your air-conditioned cabana sports a porch hammock along with a private bathroom and daily housekeeping.

The Diversions
Comb the white-sand beaches or explore the island on a guided scuba, snorkel, or kayak tour. Akona 3mm shorty wetsuits are available at the island dive shop, and Isla Marisol keeps a PADI-Enriched Air instructor on site to certify you in Nitrox use, so you can embark on longer, deeper dives where Caribbean reef shark sightings are almost as common as the Caribbean coral. The resort restaurant plates the catch of the day and serves up delicious meals of fresh fish, lobster, chicken, and pork with fresh fruits and vegetables. As evening approaches, make sure to grab a seat on the dock to watch the sunset, dangling your legs over the edge while parrot fish parade below.

  • "After a good night's sleep in an air-conditioned cabaña, and a breakfast of mango and johnnycake, you can dive 'The Pinnacles,' where coral heads rise 40 feet from the ocean floor."
