The Destination
What does it take to be crowned America's Best College Town by Travel + Leisure? Just ask Syracuse, New York. The big-city amenities can certainly take some credit: A symphony orchestra, professional sports teams, Civil War-era buildings surrounding Hanover Square, and museums and art galleries galore are just a sampling. Visitors at the end of August can even check out The Great New York State Fair at the Empire Expo center. Plus, if the urban offerings lose their allure, Syracuse is surrounded by the hills, valleys, lakes, and streams of the beautiful Finger Lakes region.

The Digs
Choose the four-star Genesee Grande Hotel for its central location in the historic University Hill neighborhood—but you might end up staying for quite different reasons. It all starts with little luxuries like the koi pond and freshly cut flowers in the lobby, extending to Brazilian granite bathrooms, separate bedrooms, and Aveda bath products in guest suites. Stay entertained with digital cable TV and Wi-Fi in your room, or get active at the on-site fitness center. Then, stick around for dinner—polished, yet relaxed 1060 Restaurant boasts a hand-picked wine list and made-to-order cocktails for refined sipping. And if you're flying out the next morning, no worries: The hotel offers complimentary shuttle service to and from Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

The Diversions

• Taxes/resort fee are not included—you'll pay those directly to the property
• Plan around the few blackout dates in 2015: July 10-11, 17, 29-31; August 25-29

  • We stayed in a suite at the Genesse Grande and it was absolutely perfect. The room was very spacious and that bathroom was probably the nicest hotel bathroom I've ever seen! The 1060 Restaurant was delicious and I would absolutely stay again!

  • About five blocks from Syracuse University, this hotel has rooms with elegant, streamlined furnishings, hypoallergenic bedding, and granite bathrooms (some with whirlpool baths).
