The Destination
Just outside the sprawling town of Las Cruces—the second most populated city in New Mexico—Mesilla is home to a few thousand residents and a few hundred years of history. While Spanish explorers first came across the area in the late 16th century, it wasn't until 1849 that the village was settled and the jagged Organ Mountains became the backdrop to adobe buildings. Here, visitors can pass by the two bell towers of the San Albino Church and wander through the boutique shops—including the Billy the Kid Gift Shop at the site of his trail—before retreating to a gazebo with snacks in hand. Art galleries marked by Southwestern landscapes and a theater that features rough-and-tumble Westerns exhibit the pride this town has in its history.

The Digs
Mirroring the facade of a Spanish hacienda, the Meson de Mesilla is a boutique hotel that overlooks the Organ Mountains in the heart of the Southern Rio Grande Valley. Just six blocks from the historic Old Mesilla Plaza, the property was recently voted as Las Cruces' most romantic lodging destination. Veranda queen rooms are painted a warm, golden hue and feature flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi. Stretch out on the room's connecting open space and, on the weekends, venture to the rooftop bar for drinks and views of the town and desert. Spend the morning alternating between the pool and its surrounding lounge chairs before tasting local grapes during a wine tour of the area. At dinner, take a seat at the romantic on-site restaurant, where you can choose from a menu that includes a green chile burger and pan-fried sea bass.

  • "Under bright blue skies, we strolled the terra-cotta brick streets around Old Mesilla's small, pretty square, which is on the National Register of Historic Places."
