The Destination
From the heat of the teeming marketplaces in Marrakech to the cool climes of Berber villages in the Atlas Mountains, Morocco is a land of dizzying extremes. But for adventurous travelers looking for the ride of a lifetime, a trip through this North African country is nothing but high notes.

Lose yourself in the labyrinthine streets of Marrakech, where medieval history continues to define the frenetic present. Cultural landmarks—including the Koutoubia Mosque and Jemaa el-Fna square—help set the stage, but it's the stalls and alleys of the Medina marketplace where the real show takes place, as residents haggle over everything from cuisine to crafts.

Outside the city the atmosphere is far more serene. Starting with the sand-swept Sahara all the way to the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, the landscape holds treasures of all varieties, from the captivating kasbahs in the fortified city of Alt Benhaddou to the jaw-dropping natural scenery of Dades Canyon and Tondra Gorge.

From its kasbahs and markets to its deserts and mountains, Morocco is meant to be explored. See this North African gem's fascinating landscapes—and kick off the New Year with a party and fireworks in the Sahara sand dunes—on a ten-day trip courtesy of Encounters Travel.

Next, switch to a four-wheel drive vehicle for traversing the desert dunes en route to Merzouga, where you'll watch the sun set over the desert and settle in at a traditional Berber camp for New Year's Eve festivities. In store for the night are three or four folkloric performance troupes, a traditional belly dancer, a special Moroccan menu, music, and a campfire. The celebration will culminate with a fireworks display to welcome the New Year.

  • "Marrakech is too packed with mind-boggling distractions and labyrinthine alleyways to adhere to boring linear logic. If you did have a destination, you’d only be waylaid by snake charmers and out-of-control donkey carts."
