The Destination
Bodega Bay, California, is a quaint fishing village where more than 300 fleets haul in Dungeness crab, salmon, cod, and snapper. Its wharfs are home to all kinds of fishermen, including pelicans and harbor seals hoping for handouts. As you might expect, local restaurants serve up seafood fresh off the boat and many offer open decks with water views. Fishing and whale-watching charters are always steaming in and out of the harbor, while the Russian River Valley wine region and California's redwood forests are within easy driving distance.

The Digs
Searching for a friendly, relaxing Bodega Bay experience? Look no further than Bodega Harbor Inn, perched on a bluff overlooking the water. The small, family-run inn boasts an expansive lawn with colorful Adirondack chairs and views of the Bodega Harbor and Headlands—the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sun set. Each lovely, antique-furnished room features a private bathroom, flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi, and in-room coffeemaker. The King Cottage Rooms also offer a deck and outdoor spa. Best of all, the inn is just 1.5 hours from San Francisco by car.

  • "Thank Poseidon for the Bodega Harbor Inn. On a small bluff over the bay, the inn has four single-story clapboard buildings surrounded by well-maintained lawns and gardens. The clincher is the inn's private lawn area overlooking the water."
