Beijing's most famous sites are waiting for you—and you'll cover more ground on a bicycle.

The Destination
With more than 5,000 years of history, 3.7 million square miles of land, and one billion people, China is a difficult country to summarize. Still, there's no better place to start than it's capital city: Beijing. Here, travelers can see the past reflected in the stony towers of the Great Wall of China, or catch a glimpse of the future in the space-age architecture of the Beijing National Stadium. From strolling the open expanses of the Forbidden City to watching giant pandas roll around at the Beijing Zoo, new experiences are in endless supply. See it all from the seat of a bicycle with this seven-day tour of Beijing, courtesy of Battaglin-USA.

The Digs
Your unique accommodations near downtown evoke the Hutong culture of old Beijing. The themed boutique property includes a traditional Chinese courtyard and luxury rooms that feature authentic décor, as well as 24-hour room service, an LCD television, and a comfortable king-size bed.

The Itinerary
Your group will decide your exact daily destinations at the beginning of the trip. The order in which you visit the sites can vary depending on weather and site schedules for the week of travel. The list of sites includes Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Great Wall, Hutongs, and athletic sites. All levels of cyclists are accommodated, and riders can choose between a hybrid bike at no additional charge or a mountain or road bike for an extra fee.

day 1: welcome
Arrive in Beijing and find transportation to the hotel. Check in, complete orientation and bike setup, and enjoy a welcome dinner with the rest of the group.
Overnight accommodations. Dinner provided.

day 2: explore Beijing
Fill up on a gourmet breakfast, then spend the day exploring Beijing at your leisure. You could ride a rickshaw through old Beijing, or go shopping for hand-carved jade souvenirs at one of the local shops.
Overnight accommodations. Breakfast provided.

day 3: Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square
After breakfast, the group will be organized into smaller riding groups based on skill level, bike types, and preferences. Then, you'll spend the day on your first ride in Beijing. You'll tour the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven inside and out, and spot Tiananmen Square and the national theatre.
Overnight accommodations. Breakfast provided.

day 4: temples, hutongs, and chinese cooking
Ride your way to Beijing's temples and hutongs—residential, narrow alleyways. Visit the Lama Temple; Confucius Temple and Imperial College; Drum and Bell Towers; Houhai Lake; the former residence of chairman Soong Ching Ling; and Beihai Park. From the peak of Jingshan Park, aka Coal Hill, enjoy sweeping views of the whole city. After the ride, you'll stop to enjoy original Chinese cuisine in a fun Chinese cooking class at the hotel.
Overnight accommodations. Breakfast provided.

day 5: Olympic Park and Summer Palace
Explore Beijing and the surrounding area on your third and fourth rides. Depending on the ride length—which is based on skill level—you'll likely have time to fit in some leisure activities on your own. Visit Olympic Park and the Summer Palace. You'll have the option to use van transportation back to the hotel or ride both ways.
Overnight accommodations. Breakfast provided.

day 6: Ming tombs and Great Wall biking and hiking tour
Visit the Ming Tombs by bus in the morning and then drive to Huanghuacheng Great Wall, the original section, and arguably the most authentic experience. You'll take a scenic bike ride directly to the Great Wall itself and then take a one-of-a-kind hike along the wall in the afternoon.
Overnight accommodations. Breakfast provided.

day 7: check out
Check out of the hotel and say goodbye to Beijing, a bustling metropolis you can now cross off your bucket list.
Breakfast provided.

  • "For all its diligence and gusto, Beijing dispenses with the persistent pace of Shanghai or Hong Kong, and locals instead find time to sit out front, play chess, and watch the world go by."
